Early morning light danced across the dock, carried by a gentle sea breeze, but inside Professor Owl’s small clinic, the air was unusually busy. The Professor, dignified in his white coat, sat behind a desk piled high with thick medical tomes, his stethoscope draped around his neck. Opposite him sat Popeye, his arm still bandaged, while Olive Oyl stood by his side, her face etched with concern as she gently rubbed his shoulder.
But they weren't alone. The clinic was crowded with new faces. There was a chubby little bear clutching his knees, his forehead knotted in pain. A snow-white rabbit sat nearby, fiercely rubbing eyes that were as red as cherries, blinking rapidly while trying to peer through a magnifying glass. In the corner, a fluffy little duck struggled to stand, clutching his chest between fits of hacking coughs.

Professor Owl adjusted his glasses and offered a knowing nod. His voice was warm and patient. "You’re observant, Popeye. But 'autoimmune disease' isn't a single illness. It is a vast family of conditions—hundreds of them, in fact! While they share a root cause, they show themselves in very different ways. Today, let’s meet some of these friends so everyone understands that these ailments aren't mysteries—they have a cause."
The Professor stood and approached the little bear. He pointed gently to the cub's knees, which looked red and swollen. When the bear tried to shift his leg, he let out a sharp cry—"Ouch!"—and tears welled in his eyes.

Popeye shot to his feet and carefully helped the bear adjust his position. "Good grief, that looks painful! Is it the same as my arm? Sometimes I can barely lift a can of spinach. You’ve got it worse than me, little buddy."
Professor Owl patted Popeye’s shoulder. "It’s similar, but distinct. Rheumatoid arthritis targets the joints. Your symptoms, Popeye, suggest your muscles are being targeted, causing that weakness. Now, let’s look at our friend the rabbit."
The room’s attention shifted to the snow-white rabbit. His eyes were dangerously red, and he looked miserable. He rubbed them constantly, desperate for relief from a dryness that felt like sand. Even with his magnifying glass pressed against his face, he squinted, unable to see the small bugs on the table. He stomped his foot in frustration.

Olive immediately grabbed a cup of water and offered it to the rabbit. "Oh, you poor thing! Here, drink this to moisten your throat. I had no idea a disease could do that." The rabbit whispered a tiny "thank you" and sipped gratefully.
Suddenly, a violent coughing fit pierced the air. Professor Owl moved quickly to the little duck, rubbing his back as he gasped for air. The duck held his chest, his feathers ruffled and his face pale from the exertion.

Popeye’s eyes went wide with realization. "So, there are so many versions of this! Whether it’s the bear’s knees, the rabbit’s dry eyes, or the duck’s cough... it’s all the same problem? The body’s defense system attacking its own team?"
"Precisely, Popeye!" Professor Owl beamed. "The core issue is always an immune system that has gone on strike and made a mistake. But here is the good news: while these symptoms are scary, no one needs to panic. If you spot the signs early and get scientific treatment, we can control the condition. We can stop the 'strange ailment' from running your life."
Hearing this, the tension in the room broke. The bear, the rabbit, and the duck managed small, relieved smiles, and Popeye let out a long breath.
Professor Owl looked around the room, concluding the session. "Today, we met three common autoimmune diseases. But how do you know if you have one? In our next episode, we will talk about the 'secret signals' your body sends to warn you. You won't want to miss it!"
